“Men’s souls are naturally inclined to covetousness; but if ye be kind towards women and fear to wrong them, God is well acquainted with what ye do.”

  1. Ha, totally what I remember thinking when when my ex-brother-in-law left my sister-in-law a few weeks before her third child was born...."Just wait till you have to speak with God about this one!" I used to mutter a lot. But seriously, it does seem true that there is this basic understanding that God feels extra gentle and kind to women and children and that Men will be held accountable for the good and bad done towards them. The other side of this quote though made me think of it as doing good towards them only because of their fear of God's wrath or out of superstition that they will be blessed for it.....kind of like doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

After Jean has this conversation with Headman she goes back to the women and they ask her what she was talking to him about...(funny side note, they kind of chide her as being "chummy" with him, funny they would joke as it is her courage in stepping up that gets them food!) Anyway, she tells them that they talked of "this and that, about our journey. He talked about God a little." The woman then says "You mean, his own God? Not the real God?"

I LOVE JEAN'S response! She says "He didn't differentiate, Just God."

What a powerful description of Jean without having to say it. THIS is why she is able to survive her journey, THIS is why she becomes an unspoken leader, THIS is why Joe is drawn to her that first meeting on the road. Something about this answer she gives shows that she is just so human and can/has the skill to relate to others as humans. I love that she let things just be with this old headman as she spoke with him, let conversation follow it's natural ebb and flow where others would have sensed the barriers and fought against them.
